The Wisconsin Idea is the cornerstone of the UW’s philosophy, and it’s been guiding us since day one. We believe our success can have an impact on our state, our country, and our world. We believe in discovery and to never stay complacent with the status quo. But most of all, we believe that we can make a difference in our world, starting here in Madison.
To continue promoting this philosophy, the statistics department would like to create an area called the Statistics Student Commons. Over the past few years, the statistics department has experienced significant growth with undergraduate, visiting international, and graduate students. With this increase, the need for providing additional space for students is critical. We currently serve 400 statistics undergraduate majors, 64 visiting international students, and 176 graduate students. In addition, the statistics department created the new data science undergraduate major, which started in fall 2020. This major is estimated to add an additional 150-plus students by the end of the spring 2021 semester.
As our department grows, we’re eager to provide an open and inviting community space for all statistics students, faculty, and staff to gather and collaborate. The Statistics Student Commons would support our undergraduate and graduate student clubs while also providing a space for the informal exchange of ideas that so often fuel academic discovery.
We appreciate your support and welcome you to please consider helping the statistics department reach its goal of raising $10,000. These funds will be used to remodel existing space, obtain new furniture, and provide technology for a Statistics Student Commons.
Gifts in any amount are needed and appreciated.
Thank you for your consideration, and on, Wisconsin!
