The UW–Madison Chancellor’s Scholars Program (also known as the Mercile J. Lee Scholars program) was the vision of Mercile Lee, assistant to the vice chancellor for academic affairs, who believed that part of the Wisconsin Idea was to create opportunities that would attract academically outstanding students who reflect the diverse talents, experiences, and communities of Wisconsin and the United States.
Today, Mercile’s legacy continues on with this acclaimed program that not only attracts academically talented, underrepresented students, but helps to build the strong community and support system she championed for decades. Your generous gifts help promising students from diverse backgrounds pursue their educational ambitions here at UW–Madison. The program includes a full tuition scholarship, mentorship, service and volunteer requirements, and academic support. Its current graduation rate is 97 percent, outpacing the general student population, and 124 freshmen were admitted as Chancellor’s Scholars in fall 2020.
“Being a part of the Chancellor’s Scholars community has opened doors for me that I never imagined even existed. I’ve met people who have left indelible marks, on not only my education, but my life's course."
- Alexis B., Chancellor’s Scholars, Class of 2017
