We are the University of Wisconsin Steel Bridge Team, a dedicated team of engineering students passionate about learning and applying our skills in the realm of Collegiate Steel Bridge Design and Construction Competitions. Our mission is to provide hands-on experience to future engineers, fostering creativity, teamwork, and innovation in a real-world setting. Through our projects, we aim to bridge the gap between academic theory and practical application, preparing our members for successful careers in engineering.
The annual NSSBC challenges engineering students to design, fabricate, and construct a functional and efficient 1:10 scale bridge. Last year, around 200 teams participated from around the country, with 43 of those teams qualifying for the NSSBC. Bridges are scored in structural efficiency and construction economy. Structural efficiency considers the deflection of the bridge under a predetermined load compared to the weight of the bridge. Construction economy is scored based on the time to construct the bridge and the number of builders used. These two scores are put together to determine overall rankings.
This year the challenge revolves around designing a pedestrian bridge across the Rio Grande. The bridge needs to be designed to avoid interference with public transit down the river. Additionally, the bridge needs to be designed in such a way that the riverbanks aren’t disturbed, as this would lead to increased erosion rates. This competition will challenge our team to adapt and apply our engineering knowledge in order to produce new and innovative ideas. We are looking to improve on last year’s results and increase both our membership and member participation. In order to help achieve our goal of a National Championship, we need help from you!
It is important because practical application outside of the classroom is what allows students to turn into engineers. Our club provides access to real world design concepts that are not often covered in depth in the classroom. We will be successful in raising money because our members are committed to the values of the club and to reaching out to team alumni, family, friends, companies, and on social media platforms.
